How can I ensure that I do not run out of cards ?

1. If English Cards, ensure order from RRDonnelly, Manchester (not 3M SPSL Manchester, nor Prolog, nor via NHS BSA).

2. If English Cards, ensure Trust has paid all invoices to RRDonnelly within 28 days otherwise no orders will be shipped by Donnelly's

3. Be aware of typical time lag in processing orders through local procurement departments as this may add some weeks to order receipt by Donnelly's

4. Estimate annual births

5. When bloodspot card stocks fall to 2-3 months (note: not weeks here but months) worth of annual births put in the bloodspot card order for no more than 1 year’s worth of cards. Excessive orders can deplete national stocks faster than anticipated leaving other units short and also risk sites being left with cards that have gone beyond their expiry date.

6. Ensure that cards are used in order ie oldest ones first to ensure you don't use expired cards

How long are blood spots stored?

Assuming consent has been given for sample storage the laboratories are required to store these for 5 years. Most laboratories store them for much longer (often indefinitely). Use of stored samples is very strictly regulated and is currently the subject of a public consultation.
